UNCSA Stevens Center

Location: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Industry: Commercial Construction / Historic Renovation

Project Overview

ECRS is proud to support the transformation of the historic Stevens Center at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), working alongside Little and Steinberg Hart. This landmark performing arts venue is undergoing critical exterior renovations to address water intrusion, restore architectural elements, and enhance long-term durability—ensuring its legacy for future generations.

ECRS delivered a full-service access solution, including system scaffolding, swing stages, hoists, stair towers, as well as trash chutes and containment, to support the intricate restoration. Our solutions facilitated critical exterior renovations—including roof replacement, masonry and terra-cotta repairs, and window restoration—while ensuring a safe and efficient work environment for all trades within the constraints of a busy downtown setting.

ECRS delivered a full-service access solution to support the intricate restoration.

Delivering solutions for such a dynamic and multifaceted project required meticulous planning and execution:

Limited Storage & Logistical Constraints: With the site spanning nearly an entire city block in a busy downtown setting, material staging was a challenge. ECRS coordinated strategic delivery and installation, utilizing six tractor-trailer loads of scaffolding per phase, ensuring seamless execution while minimizing disruption to surrounding businesses and pedestrian traffic.
Heavy Load Requirements & Structural Complexity: The scaffolding was engineered for high load capacities, supporting extensive brick, stone, and lintel replacements. Smaller bay sizes and additional support legs were incorporated to reinforce stability throughout the restoration process.
Adaptive Scaffolding for Façade Work & Glass Curtain Wall Installation: A key challenge was maintaining scaffold integrity while allowing for glass curtain wall installation. ECRS designed large spanning beams, enabling sections of the scaffold to be temporarily removed (from ground level to 40’ elevation) while ensuring continuous work above.
Customized Hoist & Safety Solutions: ECRS fabricated a custom hoist tie on the roof to accommodate lower level structural beam repairs while maintaining full hoist functionality. Additionally, custom tie-backs and lifeline brackets were installed to support safe swing-stage operations where standard anchor points were unavailable.
